We all wear shoes right? Now look down. What are the chances that the shoes you're wearing right now, at this moment, are Nike? We all know Nike for several things: shoes, sports, swoosh, "Just Do It", etc. Would you ever think to throw fire into that list? Go on to Twitter and in the search engine type in "nike ad" and you'll get some.
Recently Nike released an ad with a particular controversial icon by the name of Colin Kaepernick. The ad is widely liked, although the main message of the ad is what conjures up a lot of "fire". At the end of the Nike ad Kaepernick says, "Believe in everything even if it means sacrificing everything".
So many issues have been "sparked" by this ad, one in particular is the burning on Nike shoes. Because Kaepernick is such a controversial icon, people have declared to stop purchasing Nike products, and to be more foolish, burn them. You can find many examples of people doing this over social media since many previous Nike customers have posted videos about it. Many people have listed this event to be a "huge risk", and to be offensive to those who are veterans and in other forms of military. Though it "offended" many, and Nike stock dropped heavily, in the end it was a masterpiece. In the end Nike stock grew 36 percent and made over 6 Billion dollars. Fortune Magazine was one of the publishers of the ad to be "very proud" to be able to have it. Some people also realized that the reason it was such a success is because "all publicity, is good publicity".
Nike isn't really trying to sell anything with this ad, the only thing they would be selling is their name. They knew this would "spark" controversy, but the execs at Nike know that any publicity is good publicity. All they had to do was air the ad once during a football game, and it would appear over social media, the news, the papers, etc. This is called earned marketing. The best thing about earned marketing, is it's free.
If I were an exec at Nike, I would have done the same thing, but differently. I would have added some clips of Colin Kaepernick playing in the NFL and taking a knee in the anthem, that is what I would do differently. I would do nothing about people "not buying Nikes", that's what I would keep the same.
I learned that Nike stock grew 36 percent and made over 6 Billion dollars from that ad, I also learned how nonsense-fully sensitive, and ignorant common people are. Nike handled it all perfectly, they did nothing.
