"Sacrificing Everything" by Nike

We all wear shoes right? Now look down. What are the chances that the shoes you're wearing right now, at this moment, are Nike? We all know Nike for several things: shoes, sports, swoosh, "Just Do It", etc. Would you ever think to throw fire into that list? Go on to Twitter and in the search engine type in "nike ad" and you'll get some.

Recently Nike released an ad with a particular controversial icon by the name of Colin Kaepernick. The ad is widely liked, although the main message of the ad is what conjures up a lot of "fire". At the end of the Nike ad Kaepernick says, "Believe in everything even if it means sacrificing everything".

So many issues have been "sparked" by this ad, one in particular is the burning on Nike shoes. Because Kaepernick is such a controversial icon, people have declared to stop purchasing Nike products, and to be more foolish, burn them. You can find many examples of people doing this over social media since many previous Nike customers have posted videos about it. Many people have listed this event to be a "huge risk", and to be offensive to those who are veterans and in other forms of military. Though it "offended" many, and Nike stock dropped heavily, in the end it was a masterpiece. In the end Nike stock grew 36 percent and made over 6 Billion dollars. Fortune Magazine was one of the publishers of the ad to be "very proud" to be able to have it. Some people also realized that the reason it was such a success is because "all publicity, is good publicity".

Nike isn't really trying to sell anything with this ad, the only thing they would be selling is their name. They knew this would "spark" controversy, but the execs at Nike know that any publicity is good publicity. All they had to do was air the ad once during a football game, and it would appear over social media, the news, the papers, etc. This is called earned marketing. The best thing about earned marketing, is it's free.

If I were an exec at Nike, I would have done the same thing, but differently. I would have added some clips of Colin Kaepernick playing in the NFL and taking a knee in the anthem, that is what I would do differently. I would do nothing about people "not buying Nikes", that's what I would keep the same.

I learned that Nike stock grew 36 percent and made over 6 Billion dollars from that ad, I also learned how nonsense-fully sensitive, and ignorant common people are. Nike handled it all perfectly, they did nothing.

Nike's "Controversial" Ad

Maybe Kaepernick is Useful After All? One day I was watching the news and came across a brand new ad by Nike, which included icon Colin Kaepernick. I thought this was very interesting to me because i'm a huge 49ers fan and I always appreciated Kaepernicks guts. ESPN's Senior Writer Darren Rovell's article "Poll: Nike Kaepernick as alienated some but hit target" shows how the ad had some speculation to have some backlash, but actually increased profits regardless of the ad being so "controversial". Throughout the entire ad displays several clips of many different children in different sports, succeeding regardless of the adversity that they face. Kaepernick is the one narrating the ad, discussing dreams, and the difficult situations real athletes have gone through, and where they are now. One in particular is a famous athlete named Serena Williams. "And if you're a girl from Compton, don't just be a tennis player, be the greatest athlete

Killian's First Post

This Is Killian I enrolled in BA223 (Principles of Marketing), for several reasons. One being that it is required for my management major at OSU, another is because i'm starting my own ecommerce business (Omniporium). This class is going to something that is very useful for me in terms of marketing my business to help save me money, and save me from a lot of guess work. I am a business major, i'm specifying in business management though. It has always been a dream, of mine to won my own business, and to make it a success and right now i'm on my way to achieving that dream. I'm most interested in learning about efficient and affordable ways to market my business. I don't have an incredible knowledge on the best ways to market it, so i'm really looking forward to learning about it. I'm also very interested in using my business for the marketing plan project we are going to have this term. I feel that project alone will help my business an extraordinary a

Killian's Case Study

So for everyone who follows sports, we all know great inspirations in the game such as: Lebron James, Serena Williams, and Shaquem Griffin. Although there is one thing that these athletes have in common, they all support one man, Colin Kaepernick.        Not many athletes have a value proposition, but Kaepernick, for one, does. In his words "I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder". This has sparked a lot of controversy in society and the NFL in the past years.         Some think that this means Kaepernick hates the police and hates veterans when I can assure you that it's not the case. In fact, many officers and veteran support Kaepernick. One of those veterans who support him is Nate Boyer, a former pl
